Guptil returned to New Zealand, Bangladesh to miss Shakib
New Zealand's opening man Martin Guptill should return from a back injury for the upcoming one-day international series against Bangladesh, Saturday's selectors announced.
Guptil was excluded from the current T20 series against India, following the deterioration of the lower back, but was named for a three-match series against Bangladesh, which starts in Nepier on Wednesday.
"We are happy that Martin returned to the park for this series. He is a world-class player and an integral part of our one-day side," said coach Gavin Larsen.
Guptill will undergo a fitness test on Sunday, after which a final decision will be made whether he can join Henry Nichols at the top of the New Zealand order.
"He and Henry did a good job in Hamilton vs. India and they are a combination that we want to see even more in this series," added Larsen.
Mitchell Santner and Todd Astle are specialized team miners with Colin de Grandhome and Jimmy Neysham, who take all the pace points.
Captain Kane Williamson needs to rest for the final ODI with Colin Munro as a captain.
Bangladesh will remain without chess player Shakib al-Hasan, who was excluded from the series after breaking his finger during the Premier League final in Bangladesh.
"X-rays were made after the match and the results confirmed the fracture of the left ring. The affected area will now have to be immobilized for about three weeks," said Debasis Choudhury, chief physician of the Cricket Board in Bangladesh.
New Zealand: Kane Williamson (Captain), Todd Astle, Trent Bult, Colin de Grandhomme, Loki Ferguson, Martin Guptil, Matt Henry, Tom Latam, Colin Munro, Jimmy Neysham, Henry Nichols, Ross Taylor, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee
